Roche claim season opener
Roche claim season opener
The home side claimed the spoils in the season opener in this Kevin Mullen Shield clash played in very difficult underfoot conditions. It was the Roche men who made all the running in the early stages but they were just three points to the good at the interval. A strong showing in the recommencement of proceedings put Barry Cullen’s men back in the ascendancy and although the men from Courtbane tried until the final whistle their efforts were to prove in vain.
Roche raced into a three-point lead by the 7th minute with points from Kevin Callaghan, Niall McArdle, and Dermot Carthy. Niall Dowdall grabbed the Mals’ opening point in the 9th minute before his teammate, Jamie Kelly left the field of play with a head injury. The home side got back into their stride and stretched their lead to six points with half time approaching through Duane Callan, Callaghan, Eugene Murray, and Carthy. However, with half-time approaching, Dowdall gave the men in red hope when he finished well past the advancing Roche net-minder.
Half-Time: Roche Emmets 0-7 Naomh Malachi 1-1
Upon the resumption of play, Ronan Lynch set up Mark Meegan for his first point of the contest to narrow the gap to just two points. However, the home side enjoyed a purple patch in which substitute, Barry O’Hare claimed three unanswered points, before fellow substitute, Paddy Quigley finished into an empty net to give his side a commanding lead. A second point for Meegan stemmed the tide, albeit momentarily, as the trio of Murray, Callaghan, and O’Hare stretched their lead further. Credit to the Mals men though who finished strongly, claiming three of the game’s final four points, through the industrious Collie Rooney (2), and midfielder, Pierce Caherty.
