Naomh Malachi open season with comprehensive win

Naomh Malachi got their 2015 season off to a winning start with a comprehensive win in the end over Cuchulainn Gaels on Sunday morning in Courtbane. Played in ideal conditions, it was the home side who were first to settle thanks to a pointed free from veteran, Mark Meegan. Meegan grabbed his second, a fine point from play, soon after, before the Omeath men opened their account in the 13th minute through Paul O’Hanlon. Almost immediately, the home side reaffirmed their authority on the game and a fine solo run by wing forward Damien Hamill ended with the ball in the back of the net. Colin Rooney added a point on the quarter hour mark. In the closing ten minutes of the half, both sides traded points, with the home sides coming courtesy of Hamill and full forward Padraig Moley, with Raymie Phillips on target for the visitors.

Half-Time: Naomh Malachi 1-05 Cuchulainn Gaels 0-03

The second half took a while to settle but by the 40th minute, the home side had stretched their lead thanks to Meegan (2) and a fine point from Rooney. The away side replied with a well-taken score from Cian McDonald but it was to be their last of the day. Substitute Liam McCann made a cameo appearance from the bench and finished the day with 1-1 to his name, his goal finishing off a well-worked move involving Ronan McElroy, Conor Gonnelly and Anthony Martin. In the closing stages, the home side pulled away as Meegan scored his fifth point of the day, Hamill grabbed his second goal, before Rooney finished the scoring with the last kick of the game.
