Mals secure first win of season

Naomh Malachi claimed their first win of the season with an assured performance against the John Mitchels in Darver in their rearranged Kevin Mullen Shield clash. A strong first half showing got the Courtbane side off on the right footing and although the Ballybailie side tried gallantly, the Mals men held a comfortable lead throughout.

The border side settled the quicker with full forward Ronan McElroy rolling back the years claiming four of his sides opening six points. Midfielders Pierce Caherty and Padraig Moley both chipped in with long range scores themselves and although Robbie Coyle opened the Mitchels’ account with a free kick, the Mals were in control nearing half time. This was further consolidated when Ciaran Hughes opened his Malachis account in the 26th minute with an improvised point. However, a well-taken goal by Kevin Gallagher gave his side hope before Paul McShane’s men responded with two fine individual scores from Moley and Jamie Kelly to give their side a five point lead at the interval.
Half-Time: Naomh Malachi 0-9 John Mitchels 1-1

On the resumption, substitute Tiernan Gonnelly staked his claim for a starting spot when capitalising on a loose ball in the Mitchels defence before firing over. The game was put to bed soon after when Moley fortuitously scored a goal from the penalty spot to stretch his side’s lead to eight points. Barry Kirk and Donal Begley traded points before Coyle (2) and Gallagher narrowed the gap with five minutes left on the clock. However, the Mals men finished strong with Gonnelly claiming a brace of fine scores to put some gloss on his sides victory.
