Mals make it two wins in a row

Mals make it two wins in a row

They might have made hard work of it, but Naomh Malachi secured their second victory of the league campaign with a narrow victory over the Westerns in Reaghstown on Tuesday night. A five-point lead at the interval was cut to one in the closing stages before an injury time point from the impressive Noel Donaldson secured the win.

Played in ideal conditions, the visitors held the upper hand in the first half thanks in the main to a well-taken early goal from Tiernan Gonnelly. A point from Conor Kerr was cancelled out by a free kick from Ronan Greene by the 6th minute as the Mals gained the momentum. Greene added a second from play before midfielder Padraig Moley struck with a curling effort for his sides third point of the contest. Anthony Durnin grabbed a brace of free kicks but Greene and the evergreen Ronan McElroy responded to retain the Mals’ advantage. Durnin kept his side in touch approaching half time before Donal Begley finished off a flowing move for the visitors to give them a deserved five point lead at the break.
Half-Time: Westerns 0-4 Naomh Malachi 1-6

Some good approach play from McElroy set up Greene for the opening score of the second half, and when Donaldson knocked over a fine individual score in the 33rd minute, the border side held a commanding lead of seven points. However, a Peter Shiels effort and a free kick from Niall Moynagh reduced the arrears before Ryan Duffy fisted a long ball past the hapless Liam McCann to leave just two points between the sides. Moley responded with a fine long range effort and Darren Rowland clipped over his sides tenth point of the contest following good work from Stephen Burns. Moynagh and Duffy kept the home side in touch though and when Trevor Baylon kicked a monstrous point on the stroke of full time there was just the solitary score between the sides. The game ebbed and flowed in the closing stages before Donaldson secured victory with a fine point at the death and with that, victory for the Courtbane outfit.
