Mals claim opening day victory

Mals claim opening day victory

Naomh Malachi 3-10 Cuchulainn Gaels 1-8

Played in blustery conditions in Courtbane, the home side eventually pulled away from their counterparts with late goals from Ronan Greene and debutant, Jack Kirwan securing the opening day win.

The opening half was a tight affair with both sides guilty of making mistakes on their first day out. The placekicking of Cian McDonald contributed much to the visitors’ seven-point haul. However, McDonald’s contribution was matched by Collie Rooney who claimed the only goal of the half, albeit a fortuitous one, as the sides went into the interval all-square.
Half-Time: Naomh Malachi 1-4 Cuchulainn Gaels 0-7

A fisted effort by Brendan O’Hagan resulted in a major for the visitors, putting them back in front in the early stages after the break. However, an expertly taken penalty by Greene established the Mals’ foothold on the game and with further points from Noel Donaldson and Padraig Moley, the hosts were in the ascendancy. Late points from Rooney and a last minute goal from Kirwan put the gloss on a solid performance for the men from Courtbane.
