Glyde Rangers win league opener in style

Glyde Rangers opened their league campaign in buoyant fashion thanks to a scintillating second half display in a sun-baked Courtbane. Playing into the slight headwind in the first half, the Tallanstown outfit held a four-point advantage at the break and ran out comfortable winners by the final whistle.

A goal from Conor Sheridan got the visitors off to the perfect start in the tenth minute which was soon added to by wing forward Lar O’Brien. Collie Rooney opened the account for the home side in the twelfth minute before corner forward John Myles restored the four point advantage for the mid Louth side. Rooney grabbed a brace of scores as the game settled down, but a well taken point from Trevor O’Brien and a free kick from Sheridan kept the gap between the sides. As the half drew to a close Niall Sharkey opened his account, but the home sides Ronan Greene’s beautifully struck 45′ saw the sides go into the interval with four points between them.
Half-Time: Naomh Malachi 0-4 Glyde Rangers 1-5

Any hope that the home side had was all but extinguished in the opening stages of the second half. Sharkey was to the fore, adding his second point from the throw-in and by the 40th minute he had added a further 1-1 to his account, taking the chances that came his way. Trevor O’Brien added his second of the contest with a quarter of the game left, before Myles done likewise soon after. Try as they might, the home side could not offer a response, and O’Brien (2) and a fine effort from midfielder Ciaran Sheridan meant that the away side got off to a winning start.
